Church & Chapel

20 October 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

See below

A look at two prominent religious buildings in the town: Kevin Booth of English Heritage returns to Barton to speak about one of the best-known Anglo-Saxon buildings – the magnificent Grade 1 listed St. Peter’s Church. This was the town’s former parish church and is now both an archaeological and architectural treasure trove. Then John Pullen turns our attention to the imposing Trinity Methodist Church building which replaced an earlier chapel on the site that had become too small for the growing congregation. Opened in 1861 this enormous building was the headquarters of the Methodist Circuit so had to be capable of holding very large congregations.

Talks take place at the Wilderspin & National School Museum in the Joseph Wright Hall, Queen Street [DN18 5QP]. There is car parking and facilities for disabled visitors. For up-to-date information visit:

Admission for Civic Society members is free.
