Heritage sub-committee
The sub-committee concentrates on promoting a wider appreciation of
the town's built heritage. Its popular free town walk leaflets
and the Town Guide have been revised recently. Additional leaflets are
being designed for out-of-town walks, exploring some of the parish footpaths
in easy walking distance of the town.
The Heritage sub-committee also organises a range of activities and
events. The most important of these is the Annual Programme
of evening talks at the Assembly Rooms. To foster interest in, and concern
for, the built environment, these talks are free to all. Occasional
weekend or evening visits are also arranged to places of heritage interest.
Special family events are organised every two years. These have included
two Victorian family days, a Medieval Day, and, in 2006, a weekend of
talks and activities celebrating the twenty fifth anniversary of the
Humber Bridge.
In alternate years, the subcommittee also organises children's competitions,
with the co-operation of Barton's school. These have included writing,
modelling and painting activities. A photographic competition is planned
for 2007.
The sub-committee also assists the newsletter editor, promotes the Society's
merchandise, and, during 2007, has arranged for new building plaques
to be placed around the town with the aid of Lottery funding.
The Chair of the sub-committee is Richard Clarke.
